Coach John Schiffner

John Schiffner enters his first season with the Falmouth Commodores as bench coach. He coached the Chatham A’s/Anglers for 25 years, guiding Chatham to two CCBL championships, six East Division titles, 16 playoff appearances, 541 regular season wins, and two Manager of the Year awards. At the time of his retirement Schiffner was the winningest manager in the Cape League’s history. He was inducted into the Cape Cod League’s Hall of Fame in 2018.

From 1978-82 and 1990-92 Schiffner served as an assistant for the A’s/Anglers. From 1983-1988, Schiff was a bird dog scout for the Montreal Expos and in 1989 he was the manager of the New Jersey A’s in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. Schiffner has coached or managed 41 first round draft picks and more than 160 of his former players have reached the major leagues, including Kris Bryant, Evan Longoria, Andrew Miller, Mike Lowell, Kyle Seager, and Todd Frazier to name a few.

Schiff also served as head coach of Plainfield High School, Plainfield Conn. from 1979-2011, guiding the Panthers to state tournament appearances in 31 of his 33 years at the helm. In 2001, Schiffner was named American Baseball Coaches Association, District I, Division III National High School Coach of the Year and in 2000, he was honored as the Connecticut High School Baseball Coach of the Year. Schiffner was inducted in the Connecticut High School Coaches Hall of Fame on November 16, 2017.

Schiffner graduated from Providence College in 1977 with a BA in Social Studies-Education before achieving his MS in Human Relations at Eastern Connecticut State University in 1986. While at Providence College, Schiffner captained the baseball team, and was named All-East and All-ECAC during his career. He also played for the Harwich Mariners in the CCBL from 1974-76.
